How to use your candle care kit
Share
A good scented candle deserves a little care. With the right tools it burns cleaner, longer and more evenly. A candle care kit holds the two tools you need for that: a candle snuffer and a wick trimmer. Here is what each one is for and how to use it.
What's in the kit
The Candle Care Kit bundles the basics for everyday candle care: a candle snuffer to put the flame out neatly and a wick trimmer to keep the wick at the right length. Two small actions that together make for a noticeably cleaner burn.
The candle snuffer: why and how
Blowing a candle out seems logical, but it sends smoke and sometimes a fleck of hot wax into the air. A candle snuffer prevents that. You rest the little bell over the flame, wait a few seconds and lift it off again. The flame is out with no trail of smoke and no spatters, and the scent stays clean. A nice touch: it keeps your hands well away from the hot wax.
The wick trimmer: why and how
A wick that is too long gives a large, restless flame that leaves soot on the glass and burns through the wax faster. The wick trimmer keeps the wick short, so the flame stays small and steady. Trim the wick back to about half a centimetre before every burn, and do it when the wax is cold and hard. Then the charred tip breaks off cleanly. The curved shape of the trimmer catches the trimmed piece straight away, so it does not fall into the wax.
Getting the most out of it
The kit works best as part of a set ritual: trim the wick before you light it, let the first layer melt fully, and put it out with the snuffer. You will find all the steps in a row in our article on caring for your scented candle. That way every candle burns as intended, from the first burn hour to the last.
Frequently asked questions
Which candles can I use the kit with? All of our scented candles. The snuffer and the trimmer work on any candle in a glass.
When do I trim the wick? Before every burn, when the wax is cold. That is when the charred tip breaks off cleanly.
Should I always use the snuffer? Ideally, yes. Blowing gives smoke and can make hot wax spatter, and the snuffer prevents both.
