Scented candles as a Christmas gift: how to choose

A scented candle sits on almost every Christmas list, and there is a good reason for that. It suits anyone who spends time at home, it is neither too big nor too small, and it is finished without you having to think of anything to add.

It still tends to go wrong in the same way. You walk past a shelf, smell something you like, and buy that. Which is a gift for yourself with somebody else's name on it. Choosing for another person asks two different questions: what does their home smell of now, and how strong is it allowed to be. Both are answered below, along with the format, the budget, sending it straight to them, and the last order date.

Which scent do you give at Christmas?

December asks for something other than June. When it is already dark at four, a warm scent beats a fresh one. But warm is not a choice, it is a category. We have three lines and all three do something different.

Reposea, for December evenings. Reposea opens with vanilla and floral notes, has a heart of vanilla and caramel, and lands on musk and wood. Intensity 3 of 5. This is the line that sits closest to the season: warm, soft and enveloping, the sort of scent you light when the curtains close. Give Reposea to someone who is home in the evening and likes the lamps low. Why warm scents work better in these months is set out in which scent suits autumn and winter, and the full line sits in the Reposea collection.

Harmonea, when you do not know their taste. Harmonea is fresh: bergamot, lemon and red fruit on top, a floral heart of jasmine, rose and violet, and a base of moss and cedarwood. Intensity 2 of 5, the lowest of the three. That number is exactly why, of the three, it is the gift that always fits. A scent nobody objects to is rarely the best scent of somebody's year, but it does get lit, and for a gift that is worth more. Give Harmonea to a colleague, to in-laws, or to anyone whose home you have never smelled. See Harmonea.

Invigorea, for anyone who likes wood and fire. Invigorea is the woody line: amber and sandalwood on top, pine, cedar and balsam at the heart, and a deep base of sandalwood, patchouli and amber. Intensity 4 of 5, and you notice it in a room. One thing to know before you give it: Invigorea currently exists only as a 250 ml reed diffuser at €44. There is no Invigorea candle. For someone whose home runs to dark wood and deep colours rather than pastels, it is still the best gift on the shelf. See Invigorea.

Candle, reed diffuser or room spray as a gift?

Once the scent is settled, format is the second question, and it counts for more in a gift than in a purchase for yourself. You are not only giving a scent, you are giving a habit.

A 200 g candle burns for around 50 hours and asks for attention: light it, stay with it, put it out. That is precisely the charm. Give it to someone who sits down in the evening.

A 100 ml reed diffuser scents a room for up to around four months and asks for nothing back. No flame, no supervision. That makes it the better gift for a hallway, a bathroom, a home with small children or a dog, and for anyone who is rarely in.

A 200 ml room spray is the smallest of the three gestures and the most practical: ten minutes before people arrive, once around the room.

The full comparison between the two larger formats is in reed diffuser or candle, how to choose.

By budget

Four price groups, with what is in them. All prices include VAT.

€15 to €32, the single gift. The Candle Care Kit at €15 is a wick trimmer and a snuffer in matt black, meant for someone who already burns candles. The 100 ml reed diffuser is €28 and keeps a room in scent for around four months. The 200 ml room spray is €30. The 200 g candle is €32 and burns for around 50 hours. This is the band most Christmas gifts fall into and the one this collection fills most densely. Everything under €32 sits together in gifts around €30.

€45, candle plus upkeep. The Candle & Care Kit pairs the 200 g candle with the trimmer and the snuffer. For someone receiving their first proper candle this is the gift that keeps burning well the longest, because a short wick lets the wax melt evenly out to the edge rather than tunnelling down the middle. Found under gifts up to €60.

€58 to €60, two formats of one scent. The Discovery Set at €58 is a candle plus a reed diffuser in the same scent: the reeds hold the base steady, the candle adds atmosphere on top in the evening. The Starter Duo at €60 is the candle plus the room spray. Both exist in Reposea and Harmonea, both sit with the set formats, and both fall in gifts up to €60.

€88, the whole line. The Home Fragrance Set is candle, reed diffuser and room spray in one scent. The gift for someone who has just moved, or for someone you know will not stop at one candle. Sits under gifts from €60.

Then the question you ask second about a Christmas gift: when does it arrive. Orders placed on a working day are dispatched the same day with PostNL. The Netherlands is 1 to 2 working days, Belgium 2 to 3, and the rest of Europe a few days more. Shipping is always free in the Netherlands and Belgium, with no minimum. To France, Germany and Luxembourg it is €9.95 and free above €60, which is worth one piece of arithmetic: a €58 Discovery Set plus the €3.45 Luxury giftbag comes to €61.45, and the shipping drops away. Everything giftable sits together in the gift collection.

What makes a scented candle a good gift?

Plenty of candles get lit at Christmas, and the difference shows in things you only notice after an hour.

Our candles are 100% sunflower wax with a cotton wick, no paraffin. Sunflower wax is a plant-based, renewable raw material and it burns clean and evenly: the wax melts right out to the edge. That is not only tidier to look at, it is also why the scent releases evenly to the end. Why we chose this wax, and how it compares with soy, coconut and beeswax, is in five advantages of sunflower wax.

The perfume oils come from Grasse, the French heart of perfumery. The scents are IFRA compliant and CLP certified, and cruelty free. Every candle is hand-poured in Belgium, in small batches.

Then the number that matters most in a gift: around 50 burn hours in 200 g. Light it two hours a night, three nights a week, and it runs from Christmas to somewhere in March. That is the difference between a gift that lasts an evening and a gift that lasts a season.

Sending a scented candle as a Christmas gift

You do not have to have the parcel in your own hands first. Enter the recipient's address as the delivery address at checkout and it goes straight there. The track and trace comes to you, so you see when it lands without having to ask.

Add the Luxury giftbag at €3.45 to the order and the product arrives ready to give, in a sturdy bag that can be used again afterwards.

Two things that are not included, so nothing catches you out: there is no message card and there is no wrapping service. What you send is the product in the gift bag. If you want to say something with it, send a message yourself on the day the tracking flips to delivered. It reads better than a printed line anyway.

Christmas order dates

Christmas Day 2026 falls on Friday 25 December. Orders placed on a working day are dispatched the same day, so the last order date depends only on the delivery time to your country.

  • Netherlands: order by Monday 21 December.
  • Belgium: order by Friday 18 December.
  • France, Germany, Luxembourg, Austria, Denmark, Italy, Spain and Sweden: order by Tuesday 15 December, and it is worth adding two days on top of that, because every carrier is full in the last week of December.

These dates are calculated with margin. Ordering a day early costs nothing. A day late costs the gift.

Frequently asked questions

Which scent do you give when you do not know the recipient's taste? Harmonea. Intensity 2 of 5, the lowest of the three lines, with bergamot, lemon and red fruit on top. It is the scent least likely to be objected to. If you genuinely have no idea, the Scentsation gift card from €10 is the more honest choice.

How long does an Insphirea candle burn? Around 50 hours in 200 g. Two hours an evening, three evenings a week, and you are set for a good three months.

Is a scented candle right for someone who dislikes strong scents? Yes, as long as you watch the intensity. Harmonea is 2 of 5, Reposea 3 and Invigorea 4. For a small room or a sensitive nose, Harmonea is the one. A room spray gives even more control, because the recipient decides how much goes into the air.

Can the gift be sent straight to the recipient? Yes. Enter the recipient's address as the delivery address at checkout. The track and trace goes to your own email address. Add the €3.45 Luxury giftbag and it arrives ready to give.

What if they do not like the scent? That is why the gift card is in this article: from €10, and they choose for themselves. If something is wrong with the order, there is a 30-day return window. The conditions are in the refund policy.

When is the last order date for Christmas? Monday 21 December for the Netherlands, Friday 18 December for Belgium and Tuesday 15 December for the rest of Europe.

Do you ship outside the Netherlands? Yes. We deliver to 31 European countries, Ireland included. We do not deliver to the United Kingdom. The Netherlands and Belgium are always free, with no minimum. France, Germany and Luxembourg are €9.95 and free above €60. Austria, Denmark, Italy, Spain and Sweden are €14.75 and free above €80. The rate for the remaining countries shows at checkout. Everything ships with PostNL, with track and trace by email.

Pick the scent first, then the format, then the budget. In that order a candle is one of the few Christmas gifts you can buy for almost anyone without guessing. All the gifts from €15 sit together on one page.
