How often should you turn reed diffuser sticks?
Share
Every few days, which comes to a couple of times a week. That is the tip printed on our own product pages: turn the reeds every few days for a stronger throw. Turn them less often, about once a week, and the scent sits softer while the bottle lasts longer. One thing is worth knowing before you turn them more often. Every turn brings the saturated end back to the top, and that end releases faster. Turning more often means more scent now and fewer months later. If the bottle empties sooner, a refill picks it back up. But it is fairer to say you are making a trade than to pretend flipping is free.
This article is about upkeep and lifespan: how often to turn the reeds, when they genuinely need replacing, and how long a bottle lasts. Setting up a new diffuser and wondering where to put it? That is covered in How to Use Reed Diffusers: The Complete Guide.
Why turning the reeds does anything
A diffuser is a bottle of fragrance oil with a bundle of rattan reeds standing in it. Rattan is full of small open channels, and those channels draw the oil slowly upward. The part of the reed above the neck of the bottle releases that oil into the air. That is the whole mechanism: no flame, no socket, no switch.
After a while the top section is less wet than the section sitting in the oil. Turn the bundle over and the saturated end is suddenly in the air rather than in the bottle. That is the moment you notice the scent lift, usually for a day or two. Then it settles back to its normal level, which is exactly what you want if the scent is meant to sit in the background all day.
How often is too often?
Nothing breaks if you turn them daily. The bottle simply empties faster, because you hold the diffuser in its strongest setting all the time. A rough way to judge it:
- Every few days. The routine, and the tip on our own product pages. A couple of times a week keeps the scent noticeably full.
- Once a week. The frugal setting. Softer and even, and the bottle comfortably reaches the duration printed on the label.
- Every day. Worth it only for a short stretch when you want plenty of scent, a busy week with visitors for example. The bottle will run out sooner.
Heat pushes in the same direction. A diffuser next to a radiator or in full sun smells stronger and lasts shorter, just as turning more often does. So keep it out of the sun and away from the heating.
How to turn them without the mess
Lift the whole bundle out at once and flip it over the bottle, or rest the reeds on a cloth. Oil drips off the wet end, and a wooden table is the last place you want that. Wash your hands afterwards: fragrance oil is concentrated and otherwise stays on your fingers for hours.
More reeds, or more turning?
These are two dials for the same problem, and the number of reeds is the calmer of the two. More reeds means more scent, permanently, without you remembering anything every few days. Fewer reeds softens it.
In a cloakroom or a small bathroom a few reeds are often plenty. In a generous living room the whole bundle can go in. Start with some, wait a day, and add another only when the room asks for it. If that still does not do it, the room is too big for 100 ml, and the 250 ml Invigorea is the more sensible size. The same trade applies: more scent now, fewer months later.
When do reed diffuser sticks need replacing?
Usually it is not the reed that is finished, it is the oil. That distinction matters, because most people throw out a whole set when only the bottle is empty.
The rattan reeds themselves need replacing in three cases. First, when turning them no longer does anything while there is clearly still oil in the bottle: the channels have clogged with dust and with the heavier fragrance components that do not evaporate. Second, when they look visibly dusty or discoloured, which happens faster on an open shelf than you would expect. Third, when you switch scent, because a reed that has stood in vanilla for months carries it into your new bottle.
Beyond that, nothing needs replacing. The bottle lasts for years and is reused when you top it up, together with the reeds. Our own refill page says as much: pour the refill into a clean bottle, place the rattan reeds back and flip them for a fresh start.
How long does a bottle last?
Our 100 ml reed diffusers, Harmonea and Reposea, scent for up to four months. The 250 ml Invigorea scents for up to six months. Those are the durations on the product pages, and they assume normal use in an average room.
You will not reach them if the diffuser stands in the sun or next to a heat source, works a large or draughty space, or gets turned every day. You will comfortably beat them in a cool room, with a couple of reeds fewer and an unhurried turning habit.
The scent is fading, what do you do first?
Four steps, from free to new.
- Turn the reeds. If the bottle is still well filled, this is usually the whole problem.
- Add a few reeds. This works permanently, not for two days.
- Replace the rattan reeds. Do this when steps 1 and 2 stop working while there is still oil in the bottle.
- Top it up. If the bottle is low or empty, the oil is finished and no trick will bring it back.
For that last step there are 250 ml refills at €36, in Harmonea and in Reposea. You reuse your own bottle and reeds, and each full 100 ml fill scents for up to four months again. Worth knowing: 250 ml is more than a 100 ml bottle holds, so one refill covers a good two top-ups. Only Harmonea and Reposea are refillable. There is currently no refill for the 250 ml Invigorea, and candles are never refillable, because the wax and the wick burn down together. Refilling is covered step by step in Refilling Your Reed Diffuser. Still weighing reeds against a candle? That is Reed Diffuser or Candle? How to Choose.
Frequently asked questions
How often should you turn reed diffuser sticks? Every few days, so a couple of times a week. That is the tip on our product pages. Turn them about once a week instead and the scent sits softer while the bottle lasts longer. Every turn brings the saturated end back to the top, so turning more often means more scent now and a bottle that empties sooner.
Do reed diffuser sticks need replacing? Replace the rattan reeds when turning them no longer does anything while there is still oil in the bottle, when they look dusty or discoloured, or when you switch scent. Usually the reed is fine and it is the oil that has run out, in which case a refill is all you need.
How long do reed diffusers last? Our 100 ml reed diffusers scent for up to four months and the 250 ml Invigorea for up to six months. Heat, sunlight, room size and how often you turn the reeds decide where inside that range you land.
Why can I no longer smell my reed diffuser? Turn the reeds first, and add a few more if needed. If that does not help and there is still oil in the bottle, the reeds are saturated and fresh rattan reeds are the fix. If the bottle is low, the oil has simply run out.
Are all Insphirea reed diffusers refillable? The Harmonea and Reposea reed diffusers are, with a 250 ml refill at €36. There is currently no refill for the 250 ml Invigorea. Candles are not refillable.
